A safe space for start-ups to share ideas, find support, and get inspired
The Melting Pot
The Melting Pot came to be, so that people with 'an idea' in Scunthorpe have a safe place to discuss, be supported and be inspired. The first session focussed on start-ups - bringing together entrepreneurs, dreamers and doers, plus some great coffee (thanks Cookie People!), to share challenges, swap advice and spare opportunities.
What happened at the first Melting Pot?
People with ideas, ambitions or challenges about start-ups and small businesses came together to chat and share ideas. The format was deliberately relaxed - small groups relaxed - small groups, natural conversations, and absolutely no pressure to 'sell' or network. Just honest, empathetic chats between people who get it.

We got to know each other through talking about what we feel passionate about. It was made super clear this wasn't a networking event, which made it feel relaxed and very real.
It was just nice to talk to people who are about what we feel passionate about. I never even knew about 'pop up HR' until someone shared their experience.
I'm leaving with actual opportunities for my start-up to get my products out there because others believed in my idea.
Two hours went very quickly. Advice from peers - I could listen all day to. Way cooler than an expert is someone who has lived it.
What came out of it?
Opportunities were shared, mini partnerships sparked, and everyone left feeling supported in a way that goes beyond what friends and family can offer. The room was filled with empathy and understanding - proof that sometimes the best support comes from people who are living the same challenges.
For some attendees, it was their first introduction to Scunthorpe Tomorrow, so this mini meeting of minds opened doors to discover more ways they can support their area.
What's next for the Melting Pot?
We're evolving the format based on your feedback. The next Melting Pot will adopt a full SOUP approach: everyone gets three minutes to pitch their idea, the room votes, and we deep-dive into the top three together - opening up group support, advice and collaboration.
We're also exploring running sessions in educational settings (watch this space!) and plan to host themed events around engineering, science, art and community, creating focussed groups that connect, share and make real change.
